Here at Direct Medical Alert, we provide life-saving emergency alarms for senior citizens across the United States. Our alarms help seniors to continue living in their own homes with confidence, rather than move into a nursing home. In today’s article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the benefits of emergency medical alarms for seniors.
Personal Alarms for Seniors
Our emergency alarms for senior citizens consist of a base unit and a wearable alert button. The user wears the button on a wristband or on a cord around their neck – both attachments are included with the standard alarm package. If a user needs to call for help, they press their button. This will raise an alert in our 24-hour care center. A member of our highly trained team will answer the alert and speak to the user, asking them what has happened before sending them the help they need.
All Direct Medical Alert customers can nominate up to six emergency contacts. These are the people we will call when the alarm user needs help – most people choose relatives, friends, neighbors, or carers.
Emergency alarms are perfect for senior citizens, particularly those who have disabilities or live alone.
Emergency Alarm System
The base unit is the hub of the Direct Medical Alert service. Its sleek, compact design means it will fit right in with other electronics in your home. It comes in a stylish white and gray casing, resembling an internet modem. The base unit features a red button that can be used to call for help, just like the wearable wristband/pendant button.
The unit also features a built-in speaker and microphone, allowing our care team to communicate with the user in an emergency. The speaker is loud enough to be heard from another room, making it perfect for those who have difficulty hearing. However, in the event that our care team cannot hear the user or the user cannot respond, we will always treat the call as an emergency. In these circumstances, our operators are trained to call the user’s emergency contacts and, if necessary, to call 911 too.
Base Unit Features
Next, let’s take a look at the alarm unit’s key features:
Red Button
Press this button to call for help in an emergency. Users are also invited to test their emergency alarm on a regular basis to give them maximum peace of mind. Our 24-hour care team are always there to help.
Green Button
This functions as a cancel button, but we don’t recommend using it. Instead, if the alarm has been activated accidentally, we recommend waiting for our care team to answer and informing them that everything is alright. False alarms are bound to happen now and then, so there’s no need to panic.
Loudspeaker
The care team will speak to the user via this loudspeaker. They’ll ask a few simple questions to assess the nature of the emergency.
Microphone
The user can respond to the care team’s questions via this built-in microphone. This helps us determine the best course of action.
Support Battery
In the event of a power outage, this backup battery will kick in. It can power the emergency alarm system for up to 40 hours, so users will always be protected. Once power is restored, the battery will recharge itself automatically to be ready for the next time it’s needed.
Direct Medical Alert Button
The second part of our emergency alarm system is the wearable button. Users have the choice to wear it on an adjustable wristband or a comfortable neck cord, however they’re most comfortable. Here are the button’s key features:
Waterproof
Our standard emergency button is waterproof, making it ideal for wearing while showering or bathing. This is crucial, as many falls at home occur in the bathroom.
No Charging
With a seven-year battery life, there is no need to charge the emergency alarm button. Furthermore, we receive an automatic alert when the battery runs low, at which point we will dispatch a brand-new replacement.
Huge Range
The emergency alert button has an impressive range of more than 300 feet from the base unit. This is more than enough to offer protection throughout the average US home and much of the backyard too. Our care team will conduct a range test with every new alarm user, which involves testing the button at different points in and around the home.
Small and Lightweight
The button is designed with comfort and style in mind. It’s around the same size as a watch face and weighs just 7 grams. It’s small enough to tuck under a shirt or up a sleeve if desired. However, the sleek design means it won’t draw attention.
